Wednesday 25th November 2015: Liskeard School vs Bodmin College Academy
Jamie Lowry was forced to make two changes to his starting eleven that beat Callington a week ago. With main goalkeeper Jamie Kalicki unable to play, Zak Roberts was called up for his academy debut despite not regularly training with the side. Xavier Blackler started on the bench looking for some serious minutes.
Striker Ollie Carthew was also ruled out with injury so Josh Bourn started up front in his place.
Bodmin's very successful back five and midfield trio remained as they were once again led by Captain Corey Stewart.
The visitors nearly conceded in the early seconds with both Andre da Silva and Jacob Franks being beaten by good skill but neither could convert there chances past Roberts.
15 minutes in, Liskeard took the lead. A 25 yard shot didn't seem powerful enough to really test Roberts, however a sudden knuckleball confused him and the ball landed in between his legs and trickled in the back of the net.
George Edgington was close to equalising after a 25 yard effort with his left foot was heading towards the keepers top left but the man in the sticks was able to keep him out.
Bodmin then got their equaliser a few minutes later. A corner came in whipped in by Carl Baldry, after George Ellis and Tom Molyneux were unable to steer there efforts past the keeper, a sublime bullet header from Da Silva powered past the 'keeper and gave the visitors some much needed momentum.
Franks was then forced off with a nose injury, Jake Alcock came on for him and Bodmin's most senior player Henry Ellis slipped in at centre back.
Roberts was then forced to make a great save after some good build up play from the hosts.
Bodmin then took the lead, a switch pass from the skipper went racing down the left side. Bryn Sturdy kept the ball in, he cut in and with his second touch played a pin point cross towards the back post which met the run of substitute Alcock whose leaping header looped over the goalkeeper and put the visitors in the lead for the first time of the game.
Carl Baldry had a chance to make it 1-3 before blazing his close chance over the bar before being substituted off for Josh Galvin shortly after.
Bodmin's left wing back Sturdy proved to be one of the visitors best players in the opening half and nearly scored himself a well whipped in cross picked him out at the back post but he was unable to steer it in. After the game he claimed that "I would've scored if my feet were a size bigger."
Callum McGhee then put the hosts level. A poorly struck first time cross went straight towards the front post which caught out 'keeper Roberts and left him ball watching. McGhee was initially angry at the cross but soon changed his tune when he realised it had gone in.
Within seconds, Liskeard had regained the lead. A quickly worked counter attack beat the high offside trap and a calm finish worked off a well built up goal.
Josh Bourn had a fantastic opportunity to make it 3-3 after a good cross from substitute Galvin picked out Bourn and was only unable to direct his header straight at the keeper.
George Ellis thought that he had made the game level, however his close range effort from a well worked free kick was disallowed for being offside.
Lowry really wanted his side to show an aggressive streak in the second half, and the captain led from the front. A viscous tackle from Stewart on McGhee awarded the Bodmin midfielder with a yellow card. McGhee severely reacted and attempted to start a fight with Stewart much to the amusement of the Bodmin skipper.
Bourn had another good chance soon after and showed good pace and tricky but his strike from distance forced a good save from the hosts 'keeper.
George Ellis was then forced off with cramp which saw Jonty Colman come on in his place. Liskeard then scored directly from a corner no one picked up the loose man and the header was steered past Roberts.
Bourn and Colman then had chances of their own but both were too easy for the 'keeper.
Edgington was then replaced by Carl Baldry.
Bourn was then again close to scoring but another chance of his couldn't beat the man in the sticks.
With 12 minutes to go, Xavier Blackler came on in goal for Roberts hoping to prove a point to Lowry.
Blackler then conceded minutes after coming on, some lacklustre defending from substitute Colman gave the striker time and space. His 25 yard strike dipped straight over the new 'keeper.
Clearly angered by his tackling Colman then decided to take matters into his own hands, he irrationally swung in and won the ball but subsequently injured his shin and was forced to come off in place of Edgington.
The game finished with a 5-2 win to Liskeard, a game Bodmin could've and should've done a lot better from. Some freak incidents' led to a lot of their chances but Bodmin clearly struggled in the muddy poor pitch conditions.
Andre Da Silva's constant defensive contributions were highly important for the visitors and barely put a foot wrong all game.
Lowry's man of the match was Corey Stewart. He put his body on the line time and time again and was certainly one of the most physical presences for the whole 90 minutes.
Bodmin's boss had this to say about the game, "Our performance was good we tried to do the right things in terms of where we wanted to pass and play. They play to the conditions better than we did which made it difficult for us".
