Match Report 29th April 2015: St Breward AFC vs Lanivet Inn

St Breward went into this game knowing that a win would guarantee them 4th place in the JJ Jones Duchy Football League Division 3 with their opponents Lanivet Inn also eyeing up 4th place if they were to win all of their 6 remaining matches including this one. 

Richard Brown lined up with a regular 4-4-1-1 formation whilst making 3 changes to the starting line-up that had beaten Goran 5-3 4 days before. Ben Shaw retained his place as the starting goalkeeper. Nathan Elliot slipped into right back with Connor Speake starting at left back in place of Oli Mitchell. Scott Burke returned to the side to partner Dan Couch at centre half. Luke Richards also returned to the side at right midfield. Karl Croft and Ben French retained their partnership in central midfield with Kelvyn Tootle also retaining his place at left midfield. Rob Marks started in the "Number 10" role behind Matthew Patey who started as the main striker. Mike Hoskin dropped to the bench alongside Marting Jago, Dave Ord, Dom Hawkey, Josh Galvin and Jonty Colman who is still yet to make his home debut in the league for St Breward.

St Breward's first chance of the match came from a Luke Richards free kick in the 6th minute. His delivery picked out Matthew Patey whose shot was saved with Dan Couch's headed rebound unable to put Breward ahead.

In the 12th minute St Breward then did go ahead after Kelvyn Tootle picked up a loose ball inside his own half who beat a defender with a lovely piece of skill. He then sent Patey down the left who sprinted through the defence and chipped the opposing goalkeeper and his shot was turned into an empty net at the back post by Captain Karl Croft. 

4 minutes later another good piece of skill from Tootle sent him free down the left hand side his cross was then cleared to Scott Burke whose pass picked out Matthew Patey who was then tackled, Karl Croft then intercepted the ball and rolled his first time shot into the bottom corner.

A minute later Burke then had a long range effort blocked after his left foot volley followed a long range free kick from Luke Richards.

Matthew Patey then nearly put Breward 3-0 up after a great run and cross from Nathan Elliot was met from Patey however he could not stop his shot from blazing over the cross bar.

Patey then got his second assist of the match after he broke on a thunderous run down the right hand channel. He then cut back to Ben French whose first time strike in the 20th minute went straight into the roof of the net putting St Breward three goals to the good.

Patey had another great chance to score after a heel chop down the left hand side from Kelvyn Tootle beat the opposing full back his cross was cleared with French's long shot hits Croft and falls to Patey with his shot at the back post going wide.

A minute later a short corner from Patey sent Luke Richards down the right side who beat a defender before laying off Rob Marks just outside the area however Marks' shot went just over.


In the 27th minute Breward had a glorious chance to go four goals ahead when Rob Marks was put through clear on goal however his shot was saved and he was follow up went out for a goal kick.

Lanivet's first chance of the game came a minute later after a strong challenge on French sent Lanivet on a blistering counter attack however Dan Couch did well to prevent any real danger to Ben Shaw.

St Breward then went 4-0 ahead in the 30th minute after a fantastic switch ball from Croft picked out Marks whose well struck volley looped over the Lanivet 'keeper.

A fantastic flick and pass from Marks put Tootle in a great position in the 36th minute however he was unable to get his cross in the box. Seconds later Richards found himself in a glorious goal scoring opportunity however he completely missed the ball when he attempted his shot.


Patey once again went on a fantastic run in the 37th minute and his cross picked out Marks whose shot was blocked however Croft's follow up ended up miles wide.


Luke Richards who was Breward's top goalscorer prior to the match was constantly pressing the Lanivet 'keeper with his curling shot in the 38th minute only finding the 'keeper's hands.

In the 40th minute St Breward went 5-0 up after a corner was well met by Patey however his header he was cleared off the line, Tootle followed up with a shot and was steered on target by Rob Marks and was then turned in by one of Lanivet's defenders.

A minute later the home side went 6-0 up after a good through ball from Ben French put Matthew Patey 1 on 1 and his first time finish went straight past the keeper making it 6-0.


At the start of the second half Lanivet came close to getting a consolation however a good double save by Ben Shaw stopped their free kick from going in.

In the 50th minute, it was 7-0 a good long pass from Kelvyn Tootle picked out Matthew Patey who cut in and smashed his left shoot into the roof of the net with his weak foot straight over the 'keeper and into the roof of the net.





St Breward then made 3 substitutions with Ben French, Nathan Elliot and Rob Marks making way for Dom Hawkey, Dave Ord and Michael Hoskin. A minute later Josh Galvin came on for Kelvyn Tootle.

Josh Galvin made an instant impact after his shot was tipped onto the bar and Matthew Patey unable to secure his hat-trick from close range.

In the 58th minute a well taken corner by Josh Galvin was met by Karl Croft whose header forced a good save from the keeper.

Patey had another good chance for a hat-trick 3 minutes later after a good cross from substitute Hawkey picked him out in the box but his header went just wide.

A great corner from Galvin picked out Luke Richards in the 6-yard box however he somehow was unable to steer his header on target.

Patey nearly turned provider once again after a good run was followed by a good pass to Josh Galvin however his shot went wide.

Dave Ord had too good chances in quick succession with his first being blocked and his second going way over the crossbar.

Dave Ord set Karl Croft in a good position however his shot went over the crossbar.

St Breward made it 8-0 in the 72nd minute after a sublime chip from Galvin went over the defence and picked out Dom Hawkey whose first time half volley went perfectly into the top corner.

In the 73rd minute St Breward made their fifth and final substitution of the game with Connor Speake making way for Martin Jago. Jago made an instant impact after his touch set up Patey whose shot hit the post it rebounded to Karl Croft who beat a defender before smashing it home from close range making it 9-0 and giving the captain his hat-trick.

Josh Galvin nearly got his first goal for St Breward after his poor shot went straight to Patey whose shot rebounded back to Galvin who managed to win St Breward a corner. Galvin took the corner which was cleared and Karl Croft's poorly struck shot from 30 yards trickled into the bottom corner making it 10-0.

Croft nearly got his fifth in the 84th minute after a great cross from Josh Galvin picked out Karl Croft whose overhead kick forced a great save from the edge of the box.


The game finished 10-0 with St Breward terrorising Lanivet Inn for the whole 90 minutes. St Breward have all but certainly got 4th place in the league. Karl Croft played fantastic contributing with 4 goals and an assist but man of the match goes to Matthew Patey whose 2 goals, 2 assists and numerous key passes were the real game changer for St Breward.
